Especially when it comes to keeping subscribers around. Predictive AI, Prescriptive AI, and Generative AI each play a different role in your retention strategy, and knowing the difference is what separates a reactive approach from a proactive one.

How AI Solves Retention Challenges

AI for retention falls into two main categories: Predictive AI and Prescriptive AI. 

Both predictive and prescriptive approaches are powered by machine learning and both address the limitations of traditional strategies, but they do so in complementary ways.

Predictive AI provides foresight, Prescriptive AI turns that foresight into concrete steps. 

Predictive AI: Anticipate the Churn Risk

Predictive AI identifies which subscribers are most likely to churn. It evaluates patterns such as skipped shipments, engagement decline, or specific product interactions to assign a churn risk score

Think of predictive AI as a silent alarm system for your business. It watches for the quiet moments when a subscriber stops opening your emails or starts skipping boxes. 

For instance, a skincare subscription might find that subscribers who skip two consecutive months of boxes and stop opening emails are 60% more likely to cancel. 

These are the early warning signs that a cancellation is coming. The system catches these signals before the customer even reaches for the cancel button.

Prescriptive AI: Optimize the Retention Action

Prescriptive AI recommends interventions based on those predictions. 

Once the system knows who might leave, it decides exactly how to save them. The goal is to prevent churn by delivering the right action at the right time. 

This is where it acts like your most intuitive curator. 

A prescriptive system might suggest offering a product swap or providing a limited-time discount tailored to their preferences. 

Continuing the previous example of the skincare subscription, if a subscriber rated a heavy night cream as "too oily" then the next best action could be to suggest a lightweight serum for the upcoming shipment. It offers a solution that feels personal rather than a desperate discount.

Generative AI: A Supporting Role

Generative AI is a technology that creates new content and ideas by learning from patterns in existing data. You likely know it through platforms like ChatGPT, Claude, and Google Gemini that can draft text and analyze information in seconds.

This technology can analyze historical data to find general trends and summarize why people left your brand in the past. 

But it lacks the precision of models designed for this level of foresight. It cannot process the mass amount of customer behavioral signals to identify the exact moment a specific customer is losing interest with the same accuracy. It can show you broad patterns but it cannot tell you which specific subscriber will cancel on Tuesday.

Generative AI still plays a role in your retention strategy because it can scale your outreach efforts with content creation and design materials, allowing you to maintain a personal feel across your entire base.
