Direct-to-Consumer (DTC)

What is direct-to-consumer?

Direct-to-consumer, or DTC, is a business model where companies produce, market, and ship their products straight to end buyers without relying on third party retailers or wholesalers. By removing the middleman, brands maintain full control over their customer relationships, data, and brand identity.

For example, a razor company that sells subscriptions exclusively through its own website operates as a DTC business.

How does direct-to-consumer differ from traditional e-commerce?

While both models sell online, traditional e-commerce includes online marketplaces and multi-brand retailers that sell products from various manufacturers. DTC specifically refers to brands selling their own proprietary products directly to buyers through their own channels. This distinction matters because DTC brands own the entire customer relationship, which makes it much easier to collect behavioral data and run targeted retention campaigns.

Types of direct-to-consumer subscriptions

DTC companies typically use three core subscription models to drive recurring revenue.

  • Replenishment subscriptions automatically reorder physical goods like coffee, razors, or supplements on a set schedule.

  • Curation subscription boxes send curated selections of items, like wine, fashion, or craft goods, to delight customers every month.

  • Access subscriptions grant members exclusive discounts, early product drops, or VIP perks in exchange for a recurring membership fee.

What is the difference between DTC and D2C?

Both terms mean the exact same thing, so you can use either one. DTC stands for direct-to-consumer, while D2C uses the number two as a shorthand for the word to. In the subscription and e-commerce space, DTC is slightly more common in written guides and industry reports, but readers and search engines treat them as identical terms.
