Lifecycle Marketing

What is lifecycle marketing?

Lifecycle marketing is the strategy of sending targeted messages and offers to customers based on where they’re at in their journey with your product.

Instead of sending the same broadcast email to your entire list, you adjust your approach as a subscriber moves from onboarding to long term loyalty.

What are the stages of lifecycle marketing?

1. Awareness

People discover your brand for the first time. You use helpful content, social posts, and targeted ads to grab their attention and introduce your solution.

2. Engagement

Potential customers start to recognize your brand and actively interact with you. They might read reviews, follow you on social media, or explore your site as they evaluate whether your product fits their needs.

3. Conversion

Prospects make the leap and become paying customers. You make the signup process smooth and immediately kick off onboarding to guide them through those critical first 90 days.

4. Retention

Subscribers are actively using your product and you work to make sure they stick around. You keep them engaged with product updates, tailored offers, and proactive customer support so they stay satisfied over time.

5. Loyalty and Advocacy

Happy long term customers become true champions for your brand. They take advantage of exclusive perks and enthusiastically recommend your platform to their peers.

Lifecycle marketing example: DTC Subscription

To see lifecycle marketing in action, let’s look at how a DTC coffee subscription guides a subscriber through every stage of their journey.

Awareness: A coffee drinker searches for specialty whole bean subscriptions and lands on a blog post comparing dark and light roasts.

Engagement: The reader downloads a free home brewing guide, starts following the brand on social media, and browses customer reviews to find the right blend.

Conversion: The customer signs up for a bi-weekly subscription and receives a welcome email series with step-by-step brewing tips during their first 90 days to help them get maximum value from their order.

Retention: Before their third recurring shipment, the automated system sends a quick check in that gives them easy options to swap roasts, adjust their delivery schedule, or chat with customer support.

Loyalty and Advocacy: After six months of active subscription, the user unlocks access to exclusive single-origin micro-lots and receives a custom referral link to give friends $10 off their first order.
